Annual Iowa Road Trip!

Yes, it's almost July- time for the yearly pilgrimage to see missed family and friends, and remember how much we DON'T miss Iowa summers. This will be a short visit, since I am in the midst of a job search (thus unsuccessful). The plan is to leave Oregon on Sunday, July 5th. The drive is thirty hours, and we are old enough now to appreciate sleeping in beds at night instead of the hallucinations that come with driving straight through, so we should arrive in Muscatine on July 7th. So far, we have a Karaoke Party to attend on Friday, July 10, and a day of river tubing scheduled for Sunday, July 12. We usually reserve Mondays for Kyle's Mom and Grandma. This leaves time for my parents and Kyle's Dad, a July family birthday gathering, and a night in Iowa City. We plan to leave again on July 16th or 17th. We will be passing through Caldwell, Idaho for a night on the way out or back, to see Toni and her mom:) I am very excited to report that while we are away, Amelia has agreed to mind the pets, the house, AND the blog! Look forward to our visit (or our absence?) and our guest blogger!

We Be Jammin'
Cleaning and cutting our berries- wow, it doesn't take but a day before they start getting mushy. We picked two kinds of berries, Hoods and Pugets. We froze most of the Hoods, as the berry farm lady (what do I call her?) said the Hoods were so naturally sweet they taste like cotton candy if jammed.
The Strawberry Rhubarb Jam is tart and sweet and really yummy without sugar- and we all know Kyle will eat it now- but damn, you have to stand at the stove and stir/mash for 50 minutes. Surprisingly, the jam calls for four Granny Smith apples, which lend pectin and body, and don't make the jam taste appley at all. Luckily it was a cool day to stand by the hot stove.

The Last Unicorn
For Those of You Who Haven't Visited
You know who you are. Here's a brief tour of our happy animal infested abode. We live in a little house in a neighborhood called Eastmoreland, which is by Reed College and way too nice for us- we are the red headed step children here:) Our backyard is big and flat and bordered on two sides with other people's fences, which helps corral Willow. In the summer Kyle puts our camping canopy over the deck for a great place to hang out and eat dinner- why aren't we drinking beers out there right now? Anyways, the other pictures are pretty easy to follow, right? Once you realize I'm describing them backwards, that is. Living room and kitchen are open to each other and separated by a counter where Cheeto and Kyle often play "diner"(Cheeto sits expectantly on a stool, Kyle stands on the other side of the counter, cleans a spot with a towel and says, "What'll it be, hon?" and Cheeto just stares. It's more fun than it sounds). Two bedrooms, one ours and one an office for Kyle to carry out Pearson's bidding, AND FOR GUESTS TO STAY. You know who you are. Bathroom, back bedroom is ours, with sliding doors onto the deck and a new addition- a tv! My Grandpa Cromer's tv lives on top of our Goodwill dresser, allowing us to pretend our bedroom is a hotel room! Cheap vacation. Last is a close up of the AWESOME quilt Mom made me a couple years ago, against her better judgment:) And the matching AWESOME pillow Wendy made me last year. Yes, our bedding is cooler than yours.
Now taking reservations.....

Summer?
Kyle's on the phone talking with Joe in Alaska. Today, my principal said I was number two on the Reading RIF list, which means my chances of being recalled for a job somewhere in the district are good. And, my lovely former principal, Yuki, emailed me about two Reading teacher jobs in the Parkrose SD, one at middle school and one at high school. I'll apply for those by the end of the week. Soooo, we decided tonight to go ahead with summer plans AS THOUGH I HAVE A JOB. This means a visit to Iowa in July, and flying to Alaska in August for Kyle's friend Jeff's wedding.
But there's one more day of school, several paperwork hoops and a classroom to pack in my car before then.
Look forward to pictures of pets, plants and PDX in the near future. It's Project Summer!
